He said to him the third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”
Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.” JOH 21:17
The Mighty One, God, the Lord! The Mighty One, God, the Lord! He knows! And let Israel itself know! If it was in rebellion, or if in transgression against the Lord, do not spare us this day. JOS 22:22
Rashi’s Commentary
The Mighty One, God, the Lord—He is God over all divine beings. He is the Lord, who knows that our intent was not rebellion nor transgression etc. By repeating this declaration twice, they declared that he is God in this world and in the world to come.
Do not spare as—They said this to his Divine Presence.
So she said to Elijah, “What do I have to do with you, man of God? You have come to me to bring my iniquity to be remembered and to kill my son?” 1KI 17:18
Rashi’s Commentary
To bring my sin to be remembered—Before you came, they would weigh my deeds and the deeds of my city, and I was worthy of a miracle. But since you came here, I am not reckoned with as being worthy of anything and my righteousness is not noticeable. (Other texts: Remembered) And similarly, concerning Lot it states, “I cannot flee to the mountains” (Gen 19:19), i.e., referring to Abraham, for my merit will not be remembered next to his.
Now behold, your servant has found favor in your eyes, and you have magnified your kindness, which you have shown me by sparing my life. But I cannot flee to the mountains lest evil be imputed to me [relative to the righteousness of Abraham], and I die. GEN 19:19
Since I know, my God, that you test the heart and delight in integrity. As for me, in the integrity of my heart I have willingly donated all these things. And now I have seen with joy your people who are present here, make their offerings willingly to you. 1CH 29:17
Rashi’s Commentary
Since I know, my God, that you test the heart—You test who has two hearts, one for good and one for evil.
And delight in integrity—And delight in a good and straight heart, and so I know that with the straightness of my heart, for I have straightened my heart to one heart when I willingly gave all these, and from your people, who gave willingly. The meaning is: With mine I am familiar and I know it well, but that of others I do not know, but I saw that they donated joyously, I say . . .
And now, your people who are present here, make their offerings willingly to you—That is to say, I saw that they rejoiced in their donation, but I do not know whether it was from the willingness of their heart, as it is written: (above verse 9): “. . . then the people rejoiced over their response.”
Then the people rejoiced over their response, for they wholeheartedly had given freely to the Lord. David the king also rejoiced greatly. 1CH 29:9
Who are present—The ones found here are those mentioned above (28:1): “David assembled . . . all the officials of Israel, etc.,” but all the wealthy of Israel who were in all the cities were not found here. Therefore, Lord of the universe, the donation was diminished, for had all the remaining Israelites been there, then the donation would have increased.
